Applicant Information
Who is eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Minority Scholarship Fund?
Students of African, African-American, Native American, Pacific Island, and Asian descent who plan to attend Bob Jones University are eligible to apply.
Must a student be accepted by Bob Jones University before he or she is eligible for funds?
Yes. In order for a student's application to the Minority Scholarship Fund to be complete, the student must first have completed an application with and been accepted by Bob Jones University.
What criteria must be met?
Potential grantees shall have demonstrated academic ability and spiritual leadership. They shall also have demonstrated financial need.
How can the grants be used?
The grants may be used to pay tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses of instruction at BJU.
Can a student qualify for a scholarship to attend graduate school?
Yes, a student may qualify for a scholarship to attend graduate school. However, undergraduate students are considered for scholarships before graduate students.
What is the deadline for application?
The application deadline is January 31 for the following school year.
Does the Minority Scholarship Fund provide loans to students?
No. The Minority Scholarship Fund provides scholarships only.
How are grants paid to students?
The Minority Scholarship Fund will issue a check in the name of the student and Bob Jones University. The student will be required to endorse the check over to BJU, which will be applied toward tuition fees, books, supplies, and equipment for courses of instruction at BJU.
Does the student need to have references as part of the application?
Yes, the application form itself contains information as to what types of references are required for a student to apply to the Minority Scholarship Fund.
What is the typical amount granted by the Minority Scholarship Fund?
The Minority Scholarship Fund receives many applications and seeks to aid as many qualified students as possible. Therefore, most scholarships range from $1000 to $2500 per year. MSF will grant scholarships based on its current funding, the size of the pool of applicants, and the financial need of its applicants.
Will the University act as a guarantor for the student if they are accepted?
Please understand that because the MSF grants only partial scholarships that neither the MSF itself nor its board members can act as a guarantor on behalf of any student.
Is the student required to work in order to be eligible to receive funds from the Minority Scholarship Fund?
No.
What is the Minority Scholarship Fund's relationship with Bob Jones University?
The Minority Scholarship Fund is a separate, independent tax-exempt fund that was created by individuals who love the school, who are minorities themselves, and who desire to see more minority students enrolled at BJU to be trained for the service of Jesus Christ.
How are applications handled?
Properly filed applications received by the MSF deadline will be collected in the MSF Liaison Office. Soon after the deadline date, board members will meet to review all applications received and will conduct phone interviews with applicants (or when possible, face-to-face interviews) to discuss the application materials.
The board will meet again for a final review of applications and for prayerful consideration about whom to choose. Decisions will be forwarded to the liaison office, and applicants will be contacted with the board's decisions.
Does a student need to fill out an application every year in order to be eligible for the Minority Scholarship Fund?
Yes, a new application must be submitted for every new school year.
